There is now no difference between the "night-only” rate and the "off-peak" rate on the dual-hourly meter. As part of the roll-out of smart meters, night-only meters are set to be phased out.
Night-only meters were installed to meet the needs of the "night-only” rate. This rate was originally introduced to encourage the consumption of excess output from nuclear power stations at night.
There are still around 4,000 night-only meters in Brussels.
How does the night-only meter work?
Night-only meters are completely inactive during daytime hours, also known as "peak hours". When the night-time rate starts, a signal is sent to the night-only meter to activate it.
Appliances powered by the night-only meter, such as boilers or storage heaters, then start to operate. They can then release the stored energy during the day, when prices are higher.
Why is the night-only meter set to be phased out?
No longer any price advantage
The night-only rate used to be cheaper than the "off-peak" rate of a dual hourly meter. However, for some years now, there has been no difference between these 2 rates.
The night-only meter is therefore no longer necessary. Linking your appliances to a dual hourly meter or smart meter gives you the same cheaper rate as a night-only meter.
The meters will stop working
Today, a signal is sent to the night-only meter so that it activates only during off-peak hours. The night-only meter can only function thanks to this signal.
But with the smart meter these signals will no longer be sent, because the ‘peak’ and ‘off-peak’ times are electronically recorded.
Night-only meters will then cease to function.
Adapt the systems inside your home
If you still have a night-only meter, please have the electrical system inside your home adapted by an electrician.
- The work to be carried out will depend on how your system is configured.
- If you live in a condominium, you must contact your building manager or owners’ association in order to adapt all of the systems at the same time.
Reimbursement of up to €475
You are eligible for a one-off grant of up to €475 (including VAT) per meter. You will receive this amount after the removal of your night-only meter to cover the costs of your electrician and the inspection body. Don't forget to keep your bills handy!
Possible power increase
In some cases, you will need more power following the removal of the night-only meter. No charge will be made for increasing the power, as long as it corresponds to the power you were previously using with the 2 meters.
Replacement with a smart meter
In addition to removing the night-only meter, our technicians will also replace the normal meter with a smart meter. This replacement is part of the roll-out of smart meters in Brussels, and is also free of charge.
