If your supplier offers it to you, you can opt for an electricity contract with a dynamic rate. In contrast to fixed or variable rates, these contracts track the market prices hour by hour.
The dynamic rate only concerns the "energy" section of your energy bill, i.e. the price per kWh set by your supplier.
For the "distribution" section, the dual hourly rate will, in principle, be applied by default, as this is still the most advantageous solution for you.
3 types of electricity contracts
There are now 3 types of electricity rates.
- Fixed rate: the price per kWh is fixed in advance for a given period, generally one year.
- Variable rate: the rate is indexed monthly or quarterly on the wholesale markets.
- Dynamic rate: the price varies every hour in line with the prices on the wholesale electricity market. The day before, you'll receive the applicable prices for each hour of the following day.
Eventually, your supplier will also be able to offer a dynamic rate that varies every quarter of an hour.
Why choose a dynamic rate?
A dynamic rate is subject to price variations over the course of at several points throughout the day (hour by hour), so you can target your major consumption at times when energy is cheapest. By giving priority to consumption when supply is plentiful, for example when the sun is shining, you can make substantial savings.
A dynamic rate could therefore be appealing to major consumers who have the capacity to monitor and plan their consumption in line with the rate variations.
How do I get the dynamic rate?
To be able to enjoy a dynamic contract, you'll have to meet certain conditions.
- Have a smart meter, essential for calculating your extractions and any injections in real time.
- Enable remote reading of your consumption data.
- Choose an energy supplier that offers this type of rate.
Did you know?
As well as giving you access to the dynamic rate, enabling remote reading of your smart meter comes with other benefits, too.
- Consumption tracking on the My Sibelga app.
- Automatic reading of your meter.
- Access to new services, such as monthly billing based on your actual consumption.
- Improved management of Brussels' electricity grid.
