Electricity contracts with dynamic rates are a new type of contract that is already available in Flanders, and will also be available in Brussels from 1 June 2025 if you are with an energy supplier offering this type of service. This rate only concerns the "energy" section (the price per kWh set by the supplier) of the energy bill. The distribution rates, however, are regulated and set by the regional regulator Brugel for a period of five years.
Understanding the different types of electricity contracts
There are now three types of electricity contracts:
The fixed contract: the price per kWh is fixed in advance for a given period (generally one year).
The variable contract: the rate is indexed monthly or quarterly on the wholesale markets.
The dynamic contract: the price varies every hour in line with the prices on the wholesale electricity market. The day before, the customer will receive the applicable prices for each hour of the following day.
From 1 June 2025, dynamic rate contracts will be marketed in Brussels by the suppliers in operation who choose to include them in their offering.
One bill each month in line with your actual consumption
With this contract, you will also be able to ask your supplier for monthly invoicing based on your actual consumption. Instead of paying an instalment every month, you'll receive a different invoice each month, calculated based on your actual consumption.
Smart meters and other conditions
To be able to benefit from a dynamic contract, you'll have to meet several conditions:
Give your network manager, Sibelga, your explicit consent to the sharing of your consumption data via the My Sibelga app or by contacting customer services on +32 (0)2 549 41 00. The data are processed in a secure manner and in strict compliance with privacy protection rules.
Choose an energy supplier operating in Brussels that offers this type of contract.
Track your consumption with the My Sibelga app
Did you know that, since November 2024, customers whose homes are fitted with a smart meter can track their consumption via the My Sibelga mobile app? The app is free to download and is available on the App Store, Google Play, and on our web portal: www.sibelga.be/app
